For convenience, we’ll assume you know what a LARP is and the general idea of what that may entail. So we’ll be looking at a few things to get you started:
- How events work.
- How to create a character.
- What you will need.
How Events Work
There are an average of nine monthly events a year, running from March to November. Their exact dates are posted on the Tempest of Tridia website as well as in the Facebook Group.
These events are full weekend events, starting on Friday and ending either mid-Sunday or mid-Monday, depending on the specific event (we have two 4-day long holiday events in May and September). Players are free to come and set up their campsites before game starts, typically no earlier than 5 PM.
Check in is done Friday night, typically around 7pm. 3-day events are $20 for the weekend, and 4-day events are $25. If you would like to only play an NPC for an event, that is $10.
Friday night we will call a game wide meeting (if you hear a BELL, it means to gather up). We will introduce new players, introduce those players to staff, and give any important notes or announcements that need stated at that time. Once the meeting is over, we will call GAME ON. At this point you may interact in character.
Friday night is typically for roleplaying with other players, and time for the Storytellers to get their intended quests and lead-ins for them out to players.
Saturday, Sunday (and holiday Mondays) are the days the main quests (also called mods or missions) are run. They are slotted into specific time spots and will be noted on a schedule on site. There are breaks between slots for lunch and sometimes dinner, depending on the season.
Character Creation
Creating your first character can be a daunting task for newcomers, but there are many ways Staff have tried to make it easier for you.
The first thing we suggest for any players is take some time to read our Rulebook. This will give you a quick idea of what the game has available to you at creation.
Now, the easiest way to immerse into the game is to come in with an idea of what Race, and what Class you’d like to play. Each page provides detailed information for new players to read over, which can give them some insight into those races’ histories and cultures, as well as the purposes and roles of classes within the game.
You may come to game with a character fully prepped and simply need to be approved, or you may sit down with an REM (staff member) and build a character together.
The EASIEST way to get started is to simply come in as a generic adventurer looking for work, and the players around will integrate you into various groups. Remember, this is a social game, so being outgoing and just talking to people is the fastest way to get invested.
If you’re a player that loves in depth, vast written backstories, you may write one up and send it to a Storyteller to be approved for play. Keep in mind, this will be the beginning of your characters story, so you won’t be coming in with powerful skills in your history or the prince of some unknown kingdom in the world. Start out simple to most easily immerse.
Further, we suggest avoiding the typical tropes; amnesiac and can’t remember anything, the long lost son/daughter of a king somewhere, the “chosen one” of some unwritten prophecy, etc.
LEVELING UP YOUR CHARACTER – At the end of every event, we will post a “What I Did” sheet, or WID, on the main facebook page. You will fill out this sheet to let us know what quests you did, what items you gained, and what skills you’d like to learn.
What You Will Need
Our game is a camping event! If you have gone camping and know what that entails, great, bring your camping gear and have fun!
If you are not outdoorsy and haven’t gone camping before, here’s a list of things you may need to best enjoy an event:
- Tent (mind your size and needs, if you’re one person you don’t need a 20 person mega-tent).
- Tent supplies (stakes, tarps, etc)
- Bedding (blankets, pillows, etc.)
- Bed (cot, air mattress, support for the ground, etc).
- Toiletries (toothbrush and paste, shampoo and deodorant, etc).
- Towel (site has a shower house)
- Clothing- Normal clothing that you’d wear everyday, changes of socks and underwear, etc.
- Clothing– Either a basic layer of clothes that won’t stand out as “modern” or clothes that would fit in a renaissance/medieval setting. Avoid printed T-shirts, denim jeans, etc. Make sure to dress for the weather: multiple loose layers in cold weather; light breathable clothing in hot weather. don’t forget to wear things that you can move/fight in! Finally, decency and modesty are important, you cannot show more skin than you can at any other public event and don’t forget that if you’re wearing a skirt/kilt, to properly clothe yourself under as well.
- Note keeping utensils (a book, notepad, some pencils, pens, etc)
- A Can-do attitude (not needed but it sure does help!)
- Food/means of travel (either a cooler filled with your foods for the weekend, or a car to drive out to get food).
- Water (there are spigots on site and the game provides free bottled water)
- Hand warmers (if it’s a cold season).
- Bug Spray/sunscreen (sun can burn even through clouds)
- Camp Chair (if you like sitting around fires, bring a chair!)
- Weapons- the game has several long swords, short swords, and a few staves to use for your first couple events. By your third event, you are expected to provide your own. If you wish to come to game with your own, a staff member will be checking it for safety- weapons rules are located in the rulebook or online.
Note: You are not required to camp, though many find it convenient as the nearest hotels are over 20 minutes away from site. You may also choose to drive home if you live nearby. If you choose to leave site for the night, we ask that you please be sure to be back, dressed, and ready to quest or NPC before our 9am start time.
